Four Sodas, Side By Side
The fastest way to understand the range is to line all four up and pour the same whisky over each of them.
It takes twenty minutes and teaches you more about your own taste than any amount of reading. Do it with friends, and we bet you'll all have different opinions.
Set it up
Four tall glasses, packed with ice. One whisky, poured the same into each. Then one soda per glass, three parts to one.
Use a whisky you know reasonably well. The point is to notice what each soda does to something familiar.
Pure & Natural
The control. Nothing added, so this is your whisky lengthened, chilled and lifted, and nothing else. Taste it first and it becomes the reference point for the other three.
Grapefruit & Gorse
Bright, zesty and sharper on the finish. Notice how the citrus pulls the lighter notes forward and makes the whole glass feel like a warmer day.
Apple & Heather
Crisp and clean, with a soft floral warmth underneath. Usually the one that surprises people, because the orchard notes tend to be hiding in the whisky already.
Ginger & Honey
The gutsy one. Spice and warmth with enough presence to meet a richer whisky head on. If your whisky is bold, this is where it stops being polite.
Then argue about it
Everyone finds a favourite and it's rarely the one they predicted.
Do it again with a different whisky and the order may well change completely.
Which is exactly why we don't hand out rules.
