A Drink For The Room

A Drink For The Room

For a long time whisky was a drink you finished on.

The last one of the evening, poured small, drunk slowly, often sitting down. There is nothing wrong with that. It's a wonderful way to drink whisky (and we love it too). Plenty will never want to drink whisky any other way.

But it did mean whisky spent decades arriving late to the party.

The daytime, early or even middle of the evening was never offered to it

Think about when drinks actually get handed round. The moment people arrive and nobody quite knows each other yet. The long stretch of a summer afternoon. The first hour after work, when the day is still being unloaded. Dinner, before the plates come out.

Those occasions want something long, cold and easy to hold. For years, whisky had nothing to offer them.

The highball changed everything

A tall glass full of ice lasts. It survives an hour of conversation without turning warm or demanding your attention. You can put it down, pick it back up, and it's still the drink you started with.

That single change moves whisky from the end of the night to any sessionable occasion.

Spey Soda highballs

We didn't set out to replace anything. The neat pour is doing brilliantly and doesn't need our help.

We set out to improve whisky highballs. To ensure that wherever whisky is present, at any social occasion, it mixes well.

Whisky has been bringing rooms together for a very long time. The highball just increased the occasions it could host.

All it needed was a longer glass (and a decent mixer) to do it in.
